So its time for some old guard, swords, shields, square formations! But not romans, not after the evil of dusting the shelf under them (really need to invest in movement trays!).
I have finally decided to crack on with these basileans, horrible to make, “OK” to paint, but they look cool on the table so what the heck! Oh, and I’ve changed my mind about their color again, now their back to Averland yellow.
First 10 made and painted with only 3 bases to finish.
Second 10 made.
In my infinite randomness I remembered I used basilean swords for my black templar conversions… So this 20man unit will be 9x swordsmen, 9x spearmen, 1x drummer and 1x standard bearer, hopefully they’ll still look cool in a 5×4 block next to my Empire/Perry halberdiers, I’m also determined to get more infantry for this “Empire” army, it is seriously lacking infantry! But I’m also determined to NOT use GW models, as their expensive and look terrible, I do like Perry miniatures, but I’m thinking of adding even more manufacturers! The point of this project when it started 5 months ago was to see how many manufacturers i could get in one army while still making it look partially uniformed. So, any suggestions?
At last! And I promise, no more LotD until I get my commission bunch! So, picture carpet bombing time!
So what are the thoughts on these guys?
So here I was, about to take a group shot of my Legion of the Damned for my phones wallpaper when I decided I should really make a new bit of scenery for my photos, I always use my ruined polysterene city backdrop.
And I figure its getting old, so, I went to my cupboard of shame filled with half finished stuff, spare bits and random things I might find useful and came across two old nuggets!
Nugget 1, Plague marine conversion.
Despite the AWFUL painting skills of my youth I still love this guy! I ended up selling my nurgel stuff, had some decent bits asweo, but this guy survived the purge!
Nugget 2, meteor crash!
One of my favorite bits of scenery ever! I really should get back into scenery making, if anything, the quality of my scenery far out shines the quality of my painting!
Anyway, my bit of nostalgia for the day over.
Finished my LotD standard bearer, and I have to say, I’m super happy with him!
Love this pose! Literally looks like he’s rallying the troops.
Done the eyes the old fashioned way, I was told “paint ’em white and do a blood letter wash!” But I didn’t like the result, so khorne red, mephiston red and evil suns scarlet in standard gem stone technique was used. (Incase the picture quality is rubbish, £50 phone *sighs*)
Anyway, what do you all think?
So I’ve been obsessed with LotD recently, and figured I needed variety on this blog, so I took a step towards it, I decided to try and get some more Romans done, I love my romans! Anyway, my Mrs notices me getting all my stuff out to paint up another 20 man cohort or republican legionaries and suddenly says “sean, today you can dust your shelf.”
Realization hits me like a hammer blow! This is the shelf in question…
Touche my love, Touche…
So after almost 2 hours of tirelessly moving miniatures to clean underneath them, then tirelessly putting them back… I quickly decided I don’t want any more romans for the moment!
Well done to the Mrs, cunning level 10!
So I wasn’t very happy with my LotD sergeant that I made, mainly just the banner, that was such an old banner that the surface had become rough and horrible, the flames looked terrible, and his head, the half cyborg head just didn’t seem right, so I scrapped those parts and revisited him with some decent bits, I felt the need to add my Roman touch, and found the perfect parts!
Fear the Legion!
The damned Legion.
Service unto the Emperor, even beyond death.
So I much prefer the Sergeant this way, that roman standard seems like it really fits in, this guy suits the chapter in every way I think, skulls, flames and romanization!
Here’s the old version for comparison.
So, which one is better? Let’s hear some opinions!
So as you all know, I got myself a little too carried away with Legion of the Damned… My commission for them has not even started, and now I find myself with a fully converted 10 man tactical squad to paint…
This is my favorite part of the whole hobby, pure butchery of professional sculptors good work to create my own image of whatever I like! Endless hours of tirelessly shaving the same spot on a single head over and over again to make it smooth and then repeating the process all over the mini, but at the end you have something unique, beautiful, and totally your own.
So here I am, with my single test model for my client Paul suddenly evolved into a an actual project!
What’s your favorite mini from the above pics? Who should I paint first!?
Personally I’m a little in live with the banner bearer, the marauder banner is picture perfect for LotD!
Anyway folks, keep an eye out for some painted deathly terribleness from me as I plod my way across these butchered minis!
Until next time, Callaghan04.
